What are Dental Crowns?
Dental crowns, also known as dental caps, are dental restorations that completely encase a damaged or weakened tooth, covering it above the gum line. These custom-made prosthetics are designed to restore the tooth’s shape, size, strength, and appearance, while also providing protection and improving its function.

Dental crowns are used in various situations, including:

  • Protecting Weakened Teeth: If a tooth is severely decayed, fractured, or weakened due to root canal therapy, a dental crown can provide the necessary strength and support to prevent further damage and potential tooth loss.
  • Restoring Broken or Chipped Teeth: Teeth that have suffered significant fractures or chips can be restored to their original shape and appearance with the help of dental crowns.
  • Covering Large Fillings: When a tooth has a large filling that compromises its structural integrity, a dental crown can be placed over the filling to protect and strengthen the tooth.
  • Covering Discolored or Misshapen Teeth: Dental crowns can be used to cover teeth with severe discoloration, irregular shapes, or cosmetic imperfections, improving the overall aesthetics of the smile.
  • Supporting Dental Bridges: Dental crowns are essential components of dental bridges, anchoring the artificial tooth (pontic) in place by fitting over the adjacent natural teeth.
    What are Dental Bridges?
Dental bridges are fixed dental prosthetics used to replace one or more missing teeth by “bridging” the gap between two healthy teeth or dental implants. These restorations consist of artificial teeth, known as pontics, which are fused between two dental crowns or dental implants on either side of the gap. The healthy teeth or implants on either end of the bridge serve as anchors, supporting and holding the bridge securely in place.

Dental bridges are an effective solution for restoring the function and aesthetics of the smile, and they offer several benefits, including:

    • Restoring Missing Teeth: Dental bridges fill the gaps left by missing teeth, restoring the ability to chew, speak, and smile comfortably.
    • Maintaining Facial Structure: The presence of missing teeth can lead to changes in facial structure, causing a sunken appearance. Dental bridges help maintain proper facial contours and support the lips and cheeks.
    • Preventing Teeth Shifting: When there is a gap from a missing tooth, neighboring teeth can shift out of position, affecting the bite and alignment. Dental bridges help prevent this unwanted movement.
    • Distributing Bite Forces: Dental bridges distribute the forces of chewing evenly among the supporting teeth, reducing the strain on individual teeth.
